NBC News'in haberine göre, "American Airlines" hava yolu firmasına ait "Boeing 737-800" tipi uçak, Austin-Bergstrom Uluslararası Havalimanı'ndan North Carolina'ya gitmek üzere kalkış yaptı.

Havayolu firması, kalkıştan bir süre sonra uçağın mutfağındaki (galley) fırının ateş almasının ardından "uçakta teknik sorun çıktığı" gerekçesiyle uçağın Houston'a yönlendirildiğini açıkladı.

North Carolina'ya iniş yapması gereken uçak, teknik sorun sebebiyle Houston'daki George Bush Kıtalararası Havalimanı'na iniş yaptı. Uçaktaki yangına, itfaiye ekipleri müdahale etti.
